Magic Sightseeings and Secret Places Around Ljubljana

In this section we will show you the beautiful sightseeings around Ljubljana. It consists of the following interesting places.

The Barje(Ljubljana’s marshland) extends from Ljubljana all the way to Vrhnika. This is a marshland that has been partially drained in recent centuries. The peat layer is up 8 meters thick in some parts. This area was once a huge, shallow lake that ran dry in the Bronze Age. The marshland is known to have existed as early as the Roman period. After 1830, the first villages began to appear on the Barje: Črna vas, Hauptmanca, Lipe and Ilovica. Before that time settlements had only developed along the edge of the basin and on solitary hills (once islands). The Barje is most covered with grass and is one of the largest grasslands in Slovenia.

The main road and railway line toward Dolenjska run southeast along the extreme edge of the Barje. Here a number of villages adjoin the city: Galjevica, Rudnik, and further south, Lavrica and Škofljica, where the old main road forks in the directions of Novo mesto and Kočevje. A motorway crosses the marshland and rises into the hills between Rudnik and Lavrica.

Turjak is one of the mightiest castles found in Slovenia. It stands close to the road leading from Škofljica to Kočevje. Its rulers played a significant role in Slovenia's past. The original castle was erected in the 10th century, and was first mentioned in written sources in 1220. Its owners, the Auerpergs, were first mentioned in documents as early as in 1162. The castle was almost completely demolished by a devastating earthquake in 1511, but was later rebuilt. It was burned to the ground in World War II. Today, this castle standing in the midst of extensive forests is almost entirely reconstructed.

Golovec hill is known for its astrological and seismological observatory. The small, crystal-clear Iška River flows through the gorge and empties into the Ljubljanica River in the Barje. The remains of several lake dwellings on pilots were found by archeologists in the surroundings of Ig. The finds are on the display in the National Museum in Ljubljana. At Dol there is a manor house surrounded by an extensive park. The manor house was firs mentioned in documents in 1540, and acquired its present-day form in the second half of the 18th century.

Gora(a 824 high hill) is known among botanists as the home of the Daphe Blagayana, named after Count Blagay, who discovered and registered the plant in 1837. Soon afterwards the Saxon King himself, Frederic August, visited Gora to admire this extraordinary flower in person.

I think these are the most interesting parts that we can find around Ljubljana. I hope I have brought you the interest in you, that you will visit this villages and the whole wide area. So, hope to see you around very soon.

To the next time, see ya…
