Bela Krajina, around and around
Bela Krajina is an undulating plain bordered on the west side by Kočevski Rog, on the north by the Gorjanci range and on the south and east sides by the Kolpa River, whose banks are still very steep in this area, but considerably less so than in the Kočevje region. It forms only a small part of the karst world extending across Croatia towards Bosnia. The area is a porous plain scattered with endless sinkholes and covered with thick red blanket of karst soil. It is loveliest in springs. The Lahinja River and its many tributaries run off the slopes of Poljanska gora. This small river meanders through the low, rolling hills to the north. After reaching Gradec it turns eastward and near Primostek empties into the Kolpa River, which also turns and leaves Slovenia near the village of Rakovec. Here the state border with Croatia moves away from the Kolpa River and winds northwest across the hills to the Gorjanci range. The Pannonian climate makes this area a wine growing district. The winters are mild and the summers are hot with very little rainfall. For centuries this region has been overshadowed by poverty, causing many of its inhabitants to emigrate at the turn of the century. So next on is the history of the area. Hope seeing you there. Discover it, you will regret it.
