The Bohinj valley is the second most visited tourist place in Slovenia
Bohinj valley, the pearl of the Julian Alps, is an area encompassing Spodnja and Zgornja dolina (Lower and Upper Valley), the Lake Bohinj basin and Nomenj. Also pertaining to Bohinj are a number of high alpine villages: Nemški rovt on the slope of Jelovica, as well as Gorjuše and Koprivnik on the Pokljuka plateau. The entire basin, particularly the lake, is enclosed by the high, precipitous rock walls of the Julian Alps. Bohinjska Bistrica, an important crossroads of the Bohinj area, lies at the very beginning of the basin and has developed into the largest settlement in this area. Here stands the renovated Zois Castle. Westward the road leads past several small villages to the tourist center of Bohinj, the village of Ribčev laz, whose 15th century Church of Saint John with its simple Gothic architecture and frescoes, is a precious cultural and historical monument which fits perfectly into the picturesque setting along the lakeshore. Several larger villages lie in the upper valley, such as Stara Fužina with its old houses built in alpine style, and the Herdsmen’s Museum. The typical local architecture has been preserved in the village of Studor with its famous hayracks called "stog", standing on the meadows between the village and mainroad. Other villages in the area include Srednja vas, Bohinjska češnjica and Jereka where the road begins its ascent past Koprivnik and Gorjuš to the Pokljuka plateau. From Stara Fužina a route leads northward to the breathtaking alpine valley of Voje with its picturesque ravine and gorges of the Mostnica stream, the rocky Hudičev most (Devils Bridge) and the Mostnica waterfall at the end of the valley. Lake Bohinj covers an area of 3.3 km2 (more than 4km long, one kilometer wide and 45 meters deep) and forms part of the Triglav National Park. To this day the lake area has managed to avoid urban development and thus preserved the natural beauty of its shores and the exceptional clarity of its waters. At the far end of the lake the Bohinj valley is enclosed by Ukanc with the mighty rock face of Komarča towering in the background. The 3.5km long Savica River, which empties into the lake, has its source in the middle of the Komarča cliff and drops 71 meters into a rocky pool – the Savica Waterfall. A gondola cableway brings visitors from Ukanc high above the lake to Vogel at an altitude of 1000 meters. This is also an excellent ski center with 36km of well – manicured slopes. Another ski center is situated immediately above Bohinjska Bistrica: Kobla, offering 23km of well-maintained ski slopes. Are you impressed, we know you are! So, that is why you should immediately book an date to visit this pearl of Slovenia.
