Cerknica, the center of Notranjska

The center of this part of Notranjska is Cerknica. Villages are scattered along the edge of the polje. Which developed along the Cerkniščica River below Slivnica (1114m).

The town became a parish seat as early as in the 13th century. Because the railway line bypassed it, many of its inhabitants left the area.

Carving its way westward between Menišija and Slivnica is the Cerkniščica valley with its numerous tributaries and side valleys. In a small basin lies the village of Begunje, from where the road takes you to Rakitna, which in past decades has developed into a vacation area.

To the northeast a world of rolling hills dotted with villages and hamlets opens us before us. This is Bloška planota (Bloke plateau). The road leads from Cerkniško polje eastward through the village of Bločice to Bloška polica. Here it turns northward to Bloško polje and the villages of Velike Bloke, Nova vas, as well as many hamlets. Bloke is reputed for its skis, which were made by its inhabitants several centuries ago.
