Crni Kal the, the area and bridge

Crni Kal

The road leading to Koper descends steeply from the edge of the Podgorje plateau into the Rižana valley, offering sweeping views of the hilly landscape and the sea in the background. Throughout these rolling hills and rounded hilltops there are clusters of houses typical of Primorska, which appear like towns.

The steep slopes of many valleys are covered with impassible forests. The slopes of hills extend into the sea, forming a richly shaped and picturesque coastline.

This is the warmest part of Slovenia. Winters are usually mild and temperatures rarely fall below the freezing point. Below Črni kal a road branches northward into the Osp River valley. Along the road leading to the village of Osp is Gabrovica. Osp lies below a huge overhanging rock wall, where the Osap River originates in a karst cave.

To the west above this valley is Tinjan, which offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings. From the Črni kal the main road descends into the Rižana Valley. Hrastovlje lies in the upper part of the valley and is known for its pilgrimage church dating from the 12th century and its frescoes dating from 1490. The church was enclosed by a high wall in the 16th century.

To the east there is a scenic, dry fertile valley known as Moravška vala and the village of Moravž. Extending westward to the Dragonja valley and further on toward the coast are hills and ridges dotted with many hamlets and typical old stone villages.

So we are done. Seeing you soon...
