Goricko, the northern part of Prekmurje
The northern half of the Prekmurje region is known as Goricko. This is a land of low, rolling hills with long, rounded ridges. In some parts the ridges rise into cap shaped prominences, while in others they descend into broad saddles. One third of Goričko is predominantly covered with pine forests, and the region also abounds in beech, oak and alder trees. This is a fruit growing district, since the soil is not suitable for wine growing. Numerous streams flow mainly from the north towards the Ledava River on the south. Goričko borders on Austria to the north and on Hungary to the east. The western part is more densely settled than the eastern part, especially in the Ledava valley. The Ledava flows from the north and has its source in Austria. Lying in the Ledava valley are the villages of Satina, Serdica, Jurij, Venčeslavci and Pertoča. In this area the Ledava is dammed and forms a huge artificial lake – Ledavsko jezero (Ledava Lake). To the east between Grački potok (Grad stream) and Radkovski potok (Radkovci stream), perched on a ridge, is the village of Grad, which was named after a mighty medieval castle. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1214. Today it stands partly abandoned and almost in ruins. A museum room displaying the sparse remains of a once rich collection has been set up in the castle chapel. Other larger villages to the east are Križevci, Šalovci and Hodoš, an international border crossing to Hungary. Uf, and we did it again. See you soon in Slovenia. There you can visit Postojna Cave, go to the Cost, to Portorož, Koper, Izola, Piran and Ankaran. Or are this places to hot for you? Then check out Bled Lake and Bohinj Lake, and there is also Kranjska Gora. That is for now...
