The Goriska Brda are known for its wine

Goriska Brda (Gorica hills)

The Soča is dammed in several places and forms two artificial lakes – Tolmin Lake and Plave Lake, which covers an area of 27 hectares. At an altitude of less than 100 meters, the Soča River works its way through a narrow ravine between Sabotin and Sveta gora (Holy Mountain) and enters the Friuli plain. Near Solkan it crosses the Slovene-Italian border and continues to flow through Italy, where it empties into the Adriatic Sea.

A road leading steeply uphill from Plave brings you to Vrhovlje, offering a marvelous view of the winegrowing region of Goriška brda. Although the Brda region stretches like a tongue into neighboring Italy and is geographically linked to the land across the border, the local population of the Brda villages is completely Slovenian.

Kojsko was once a fortified village, as is evident from the ruins on the rising slope. Not far away are the villages of Šmartno and Vedrijan. Dobrovo boasts a renovated castle and a huge wine cellar, where most of the wine from the Brda region is collected.

To the extreme south of the Brda region is Vipolže, famous for its Renaissance castle and an avenue lined with 500 year-old cypress trees. It is interesting to note that the villages at the foot of the Brda hills are entirely populated by Italians. A sharp boundary separates the two nations in this region. The Brda hills are reputed for their excellent top-quality wines and numerous wine cellars.

So we hope you will try this excellent wine, because it tastes great. To the next time. Se ya...
