Grosuplje, the center of Lower Carniola
The center of the first part of Dolenjska is Grosuplje. From here several roads branch off in the direction of Novo mesto, the Krka River valley, Velike Lašče and the Posavje region. The railway line forks in the directions of Novo mesto and Kočevje. North of the town is Magdalenska gora with its still visible ramparts. Archeological excavations have revealed numerous Illyrian and Celtic graves in this area. East of the Barje (Ljubljana marshland) the roads and railway line rise uphill to the village of Šmarje - -Sap and then descend into the basin. Further ahead toward the east are three basins nestled between the soft, undulating green hills: Višnja gora, Stična and Šentvid. These are the first larger settlements of the Dolenjska region. The area is densely populated and its soil is very fertile. Regional centers have developed at crossroads. To the north of these small basins are the Posavje hills, and to the south karst plateaus. Yes, that was the center of Lower Carniola. We hope you have enjoyed it. See you soon...
