Haloze, vine and history is and was made here

Haloze is a land of rolling vineyards between the Dravinja and Drava to the north and the Slovene – Croatian border to the south.

The streams flowing from the hills towards the Dravinja and Drava have carved countless deep ravines in the hillsides. The western hills are higher than those on the east, but rarely exceed 500 meters.

The road leading from Ptuj to the region crosses the Drava River below the Borl Castle. The passage across the river was once guarded by a Roman fortification. The Borl Castle had a very turbulent history. It is first mentioned in written sources in 1255. Documents dating from 1291 describe the fierce battles fought for the castle.

In 1481 the Hungarian king Matija Korvin had the castle torn down. In 1542 the castle was assessed as severely damaged, and was later restored. In 1706 the castle burned down, but a new one was built in its place. During World War II the castle served as a transient camp, as did Rajhenburg Castle.

The village of Zavrč lies on the easternmost slopes of the hills, on the spot where the Drava makes a sweeping curve into Croatian territory. A castle stood here in the past.

That is Slovenia, beautiful, exciting and impressive. Looking for more? Do not miss a part of the capital Ljubljana, then Bled Lake, Bled castle, Bohinj, Kranjska gora, Postojna Cave and many more... From Haloze back to the Drava Region
