Around Ilirska Bistrica

Ilirska Bistrica

Between Vremščica and Brkini region, the Reka River carved a narrow, winding valley in which one rarely finds a flat piece of land. The road from Pivka takes you along the narrow valley of the Mrzlek stream into the Reka River Valley.

The valley begins to broaden at Prem. In this picturesque village the stone houses are squeezed in between the Roman castle and church.

The town lies on the broadest part of the valley between Brkini and Snežnik mountain (1796m). Numerous finds testify to the existence of an ancient settlement in this area.

Near Harije, not far from the road connecting the town of Bistrica with Matarsko podolje (system of valleys), two beautiful lakes are nestled in the Brkini hills. Mola (lower lake) covering an area of 74 hectares, and Klivnik (upper lake) with an area of 36 hectares.

The road running southward from here leads past Jelšane to the nearby international border crossing to Croatia.

From here we will visit the next town and that is Kozina. Be seeing you there...
