Izola, an old fishing town

A road leads from Koper to Izola, below steep slopes, almost vertically cut in some parts and arrives to an old fishing town.

The old town stands on a limestone peninsula jutting into the sea from a small plain. The new town developed on this plain, linking the old town with the settlements of Livada and Jagodje.

An old Roman settlement known as Haliaetum stood on this site as early as in the 2nd century. The town itself was established by refugees from Aquileia in the 7th century. After Koper, this area also came under Venetian rule.

The road continues across the nearby hill offering a remarkable view of the town and descends through a valley lined with pine trees to Strunjan Bay.
