The Karst, hot and sunny

The Karst extends from the Vipava Valley to the Gulf of Trieste. This is a lime stone plateau abounding in dry valleys, sinkholes and caves.

Here one can follow the underground flow of the Reka River, which sinks underground at the entrance to the magnificent Caves of Škocjan. The Reka River reappears 300 meters below the earth’s surface in Kačna Cave near Divača, and finally comes to light as the Timav River, which empties into the Gulf of Trieste.

Two other famous caves are Vilenica near Lokev, which is open to tourists, and the less easily accessible Lipiška jama (Lipica Cave) between sežana and Lipnica. Two more particularities of the region are: green Lipica is the home of magnificent white horses, the famous Lipizzaners. The barren soil above the Vipava valley is ideal for the cultivation of grapes. This is the home of Teran, a famous red wine.

The region begins to rise on the east side. The highest hill is Vremščica, which on clear days offers a sweeping view of the entire southern Littoral region.
