The forest of Kocevski Rog

Extending to the west beyond the Mala gora ridge are the vast forests of Kocevski Rog. Kočevsko polje is enclosed, on the south and west sides, by enormous forests extending from the Krka River valley on the east to the Kolpa River and further on to the Gorski kotar range in Croatia.

To the west the forests stretch across Notranjska to Snežnik Mountain and all the way to Ilirska Bistrica. The forests abound in game, and even bears, wolves and lynxes are occasionally seen.

In 1847 coal was discovered in Šalka vas near Kočevje. A lake has formed in the former open coal bit between Kočevje and Šalka vas. This is Rudniško jezero (Mine Lake) with a length of 1km and a depth of up to 60m.

Because of the continuous supply of underground water from the former mine, the lake water remains pure and clean. In past years the lake shore is also being arranged for visitors.

Now we have finished with our biggest and richest forest, we are moving to the town of Kočevje. See you there...
