The town of Ljutomer and Verzej
Ljutomer developed on the easternmost slopes of the Slovenske gorice hills, on the south side of the Mura Plain. Here the Ščavnica unites with numerous streams and near Gibina empties into the Mura River. Only one kilometer to the east the Mura River crosses the Slovene – Croatian border. A castle was gradually built around the initial defense tower in town, and later on a settlement developed around the castle. The place obtained market rights in 1265, but was only proclaimed a town in 1927. Veržej lies along the Mura River on the Mura Plain, on the spot where the road and railway running from here to Murska Sobota cross the river. Veržej was granted market rights in the 14th century. A manor house owned by “Serbian Uskoks” fleeing the Turks once stood here. The floating mills on the Mura have left a unique stamp on this part of the river. Now we have done our part.
