Logatec, the center of the Inner Carniola region
The Notranjska region begins with the Logatec basin, which resembles a karst polje (depression). The north part of the basin is dry, full of sinkholes and covered coniferous forests. The Logaščica River flows through the southern part of the basin and sinks underground the town. The center of the region is a settlement uniting seven villages. A post already stood here in roman times. A settlement began to grow around the post. Through the long centuries almost all the activities in the settlement were related to road transport. The coming of the railroad accelerated the growth of the settlement. To the south the old Ljubljana-Koper main road leads through Grčavec to Planinsko polje, the most typical karst polje in Slovenia, lying between Zagora to the west and the karst plateau of ravnik to the east. The Unica River twists and turns in a shallow channel across Planinsko polje. The length of its course across the valley is three times longer than the length of the polje, which is covered with grass and rare species of trees. Only the banks of the Unica are overgrown with bushes. Almost every year the polje is flooded by the Unica River, which is why the houses are built higher up the slopes. From roman times to today, the area was, is and shall be always interesting.
