The Loska Dolina, a nice and quiet valley
Southward the road leads past the famous Križna Cave (with 22 underground lakes) to Loska dolina. The Obrh River, which flows through this valley, originates in two springs, one below the Racna gora ridge, whost highest peak is Petelinjek (1212m), and the other below Snežnik (1796m). Lož, the first settlement in the valley, was already known in the Middle Ages. It was granted town rights in the 15th century. The ruins of Pusti grad (Bleak Castle) are clearly visible on the hill above Lož. After World War II., Lož lost its own rights and Stari trg became the most important settlement in the valley. Snežnik Castle was first mentioned in written sources in 1268 as Sneperch. At that time the castle was the property of the patriarchs of Aquileia, who assigned it to the Lambergs in 1395. The present day castle building dates from the 16th century. The castle is built on a solitary rock in the center of a broad natural channel. Today it houses a museum. Leaving Loška dolina, the road forks. One road leads past the castle to Snežnik mountain, and the other runs from Pudob towards the nearby Babno polje and across the border to Croatian Prezid. The road which branches off below the Racna gora ridge runs eastward to Retje, where it turns north toward Ribnica. We hope you have had fun and learned something new.
