The Mura River and three castles

The Slovenske gorice hills extend from Drava River on the south to the Mura River on the north. These two rivers run parallel on Slovene territory towards their confluence on the far side of Medjimurje in Croatia.

The Mura originates in Austria and enters Slovenia near Ceršak, only a few kilometers north of Šentilj international border crossing. From here it runs along the state boundary with Austria almost to Radenci.

On the extreme western part of Apaško polje (Apače Plain), which lies between Mura on the north, Slovenske Gorice on the south and extending all the way to Gornja Radgona on the east stands the mighty Cmurek Castle on a steep cliff. In the past the castle guarded the passage across the River.

Below is the Trate border crossing, where the road leads across the bridge to Austrian Mureck (Cmurek). The castle is one of the oldest and most famous in Slovenia, but regretfully serves the same purpose as the Hrastovec Castle.

A road branches off the Lenart – Gornja Radgona main road near Ihova and runs along the Ščavnica River valley to Negova. The Negova Castle has stood here since the 11th century, but is today sadly falling to ruin.

So we are done for this time. See you next time. And do not forget to check all the other Regions, especially Ljubljana, Bohinj, Bled and Postojna Cave. That all on the sunny side of the Alps - In Slovenia.
