Ormoz, the most important area in the Turkish invasions
Along the traffic routes leading from Ptuj to Ormoz are the villages of Cvetkovci, Trgovščice and Velika Nedelja. In 1119 these settlements became the property of the German order of the Knights of the Cross, who later acquired extensive estates in this area. At Velika Nedelja there is a large church on the hilltop above the village. Alongside the village stands a castle from the 17th century. Ormož lies on the easternmost slopes of the Slovenske gorice hills, just above the Drava River. In this region the state border with Croatia runs along the river. East of Ormož the railway line forks. One line runs eastward past Središče ob Dravi and across the border to Croatian Čakovec. Ormož was already settled a hundred year before Christ. An Illyrian settlement stood on the site at the time. This was followed by a Roman settlement. At the end of the 12th century a defense tower was erected. After several additions and extensions, the tower was gradually transformed into the Ormož Castle. Ormož was granted town rights in 1331. During the period of Turkish invasions it was the most important fortification in the Štajersko (Styria) region. From the past to today.
