Around Piran, a town with history

Piran

A rocky cape projects westward from Šavrinska brda (hills) into the sea. A town with narrow, steep streets and a large main square began to grow on its very top.

The town was already settled in the Illyrian and Roman periods. Like Koper and Izola, it came under Venetian rule in 1283. Since then the town has been separated from the main land by a high wall and towers. The central gate has also been preserved.

The parish church, which dominates the town, dates from the 17th century. Its many Gothic and Baroque palaces and houses testify to the town’s considerable economic strength in the past.

Today, it is a typical Mediterranean coastal town with a preserved old town core. In summer its cool, narrow streets and souvenirs of a rich past attract numerous visitors.

Here we are and we hope you have enjoyed it. Thanks and be seeing you soon...
