Postojna Cave and the village of Postojna

Postojna Cave

Postojna lies on the east edge of the Postojna basin, encircled on all sides by smoothly rounded and forest-covered karst mountains and rocky Nanos (1262m) to the west.

The Pivka River flows from the Pivka basin southward. At Postojna it is joined by its tributary, the Nanoščica, which originates in numerous springs in the western part of the Postojna basin.

Near Postojna the Pivka River enters the Cave (over 20km long), a natural wonder of the subterranean world. This is one of the most beautiful underground caves open to visitors in Europe. The cave had 104 visitors in 1819. This figure rose to well over 10.000 in 1901, and to this day more than 25 million visitors have admired the unique beauty of this cave.

The Pivka River can be followed in its underground course in a number of other caves also open to visitors: Črna jama (Black Cave), Pivka jama (Pivka Cave) and Planinska jama (Planina Cave). All these caves together form the Cave system.

A permanent Karst collection is on display at the Karst Research Institute in Postojna. The first hotel Postojna was opened in the far-off year of 1874.

So that is all folks, hope seeing you soon at Inner Carniola...
