Radovljica, a beautiful town in Upper Carniola

Radovljica

The geographic center of the upper part of Gorenjska is at the confluence of the Sava Bohinjka and Sava Dolinka Rivers. It is located on the northernmost plain of the Ljubljana basin, also referred to as Dežela (Country).

To the south east Dežela is closed in by woodlands and on the other sides by the steep slopes of the Karavanke Mountains and Julian Alps with their high alpine plateaus: Jelovica, Pokljuka and Mežaklja. Two larger valleys wind uphill from Dežela between steep slopes and, in some parts, precipitous walls. The blind valley of the Sava Bohinjka runs southwest and ends in the Bohinj basin, while the upper Sava valley runs northwest and crosses the border into Italy.

The urban center of Dežela is Radovljice, a town established by the Ortenburgs. Its excellent position on a promontory between the Sava and Suha Rivers was of great significance for its development. The town was granted town rights in the 15th century. The rectangular main square encircled with old single-storey bourgeois houses has been preserved to this day. At the end of the square is a parish church and a castle housing a unique museum of apiculture.

The most interesting building in the old town center is the Šivec house, an outstanding monument of the 16th century architecture. The house has been transformed into an art gallery, and also serves as a wedding hall.

So this is THE END. Thank you that you read this interesting text, and we hope you will soon visit it.
