Ribnica, the town with many specialties
Ribnica developed alongside a castle encircled by a moat. It is the seat of one of the oldest parishes in the Dolenjska region, which in the past encompassed an enormous area extending from Velike Lašče to the Kolpa River. The town was granted market rights before Kočevje, and had a seven-year Latin school as early as in the 14th century. A museum has been opened in the town castle. The area is particularly famous for its woodcraft and makers of wood ware. From the 15th century onwards the inhabitants have been making “suha roba” (hand-made wooden products, such as rakes, riddles, cooking utensils, graters…). These articles were carried by heavily loaded peddlers to be sold far and wide. Today these peddlers can still be seen selling their products all over Slovenia, but no longer on foot. Nowadays they bring their wood ware to fairs and markets by truck. Here we are, that is it. Have you any questions? Ask us and send us an e-mail, right now, before you forget. O.K. See, ya...
