Savinja Valley, a source of health

The Savinja Valley

The Savinja River flows through a very narrow valley from Celje to its confluence with the Sava River near Zidani most.

The landscape is reminiscent of a high alpine region. The Savinja River valley cuts deep into the Posavje hills. The first village in the valley rising uphill from Zidani most is Obrežje.

The small Gračnica River flows from the east down a long, winding valley to join the Savinja near Gračnica. A road leads from here to Jurklošter and Planina pri Sevnici below Bohor Mountain, whose highest peak is Veliki Javornik, and further on to Kozjansko region. A Carthusian monastery from the 12th century stands in Jurklošter.

North of Gračnica the Savinja River valley winders. In the midst of dark forests is a park with exotic plants. This is Rimske toplice, named after its numerous finds from the Roman period.

Upstream from here the valley broadens. Thermal water springs can also be found a few kilometers higher in a valley near Laško. Not far away is the village of Marija Gradec with its interesting Gothic church standing at the confluence of the Lahomnica and the Savinja Rivers.

Now we hope you are impressed. We are! So want to visit Slovenia? Some best choices are Ljubljana, Bohinj Lake, Bled Lake and Postojna Cave. So come on, do not waste your time! Hurry up to see a natural beauty of Europe.
