Lovely town of Sezana
Sezana only began to develop after the Second World War. It is situated along the main road and railway line leading to Trieste. The main road leads through Senadolska dolina (valley) towards Divača and Senožeče. Divača is an important railway junction (Ljubljana-Koper-Trieste-Pula). The wine rout runs northward from Sežana towards Tomaj, the capital of Teran wine. Old Tomaj stands on a hilltop overlooking the scenic country side. Everywhere one looks the red-brown karst soil is planted with vineyards and covered with oak forests. A little further on is the village of Dutovlje. To the north is the ancient village of Štanjel, whose origins go back to the Middle Ages. On the top of the hill are the ruins of an old defense tower from the 12th century. Lower along the hillside, in a clustered stone settlement, lies a 16th century castle of the Counts of Gorica. Štanjel is enclosed by a wall. To the west the Karst plateau gradually descends and narrows. The large settlement in this area is Komen with its 16th century church decorated with frescos created by the famous Italian painter, Julius Quaglia. South of Sežana is Lipica. A stud farm was established here in 1580 by the Court of Vienna. Lipizzaners are bred from domestic and Spanish horses. The stud farm lies in a green oasis in the midst of a barren Karst landscape, surrounded by a forest of century old oak trees. Along the road between the Slovene-Italian border and the village of Divača is Lokev, a medieval ecclesiastical center and market. So I leave you to a choice. Will you visit this area or not?The answer is of course: YES, with no doubt!
