The town of Slovenska Bistrica
Slovenska Bistrica was settled in Roman times, and began to grow along the road leading from Celje to Maribor. It was already a market in the 11th century, and was granted market rights as early as in 1313. In the period of Turkish invasions the town was encircled with massive walls. The mighty Attems Castle additionally strengthened its defense. The southern slopes of Pohorje above the town are a winegrowing region. Scattered among the vineyards and countless cottages are the villages of Devina, Kovača vas, particuly famous is Ritoznoj, and Zgornja Polskava. Higher up the slope is Šmartno na Pohorju. Spodnja Polskava lies on the very edge of the Drava Plain. Pragersko is a railway junction. Here the railway line coming from the directions of Croatia and Hungary connects with the Trieste – Vienna line. To the west are the villages of Zgornja (upper) and Spodnja (lower) Ložnica. A road from Bistrica leads past here to the upper Dravinja valley. Lying on the slopes of Pohorje is Tinjska gora, where the remains of a fortified settlement of the ancient Celts were excavated.
