Soca, the crystal clear River
Soca River The Vršič pass offers a breathtaking view of the fantastically shaped mountain peaks and ridges to the south. Winding for below their steep, mostly precipitous walls are the Trenta Valley, which won the heart of the famous mountaineer, Dr. Julious Kugy, who praised its fascinating beauty in his works. Only a leap from Vršič below the steep slopes of mighty Mojstrovka (2366m) is the Soča spring, the source of the loveliest river in Europe. It is only 80km of air distance from its source in the Alps to the spot where it empties into the Adriatic Sea. The Soča winds through an extremely picturesque and diversified landscape – along deep alpine valleys, across green mountain pastures and karst plateaus to the Friuli lowlands in Italy and the Adriatic Sea. The upper, blind part of the valley is called Zadnja Trenta. Typical, isolated alpine farms are scattered throughout the valley. On the north the Trenta Valley is enclosed by Mojstrovka and Jalovec (2645m), on the east by Prisojnik (2547m), Razor (2601m), Planja (2453m) and Goličica (2101m), on the south by the towering crest of Trentarski Pelec (2109m), and on the west by the rocky ridge of Veliki Pelec (2388m). The crystal-clear, glimmering Soča River flows downward across white moraine through a narrow valley.
