Trebnje and its surroundings
Trebnje, the center of this part of Dolenjska, is situated in the midst of soft, green rolling hills along the Temenica River. In prehistoric times the area was inhabited by the Celts. In the Roman era a post by the name of Praetorium Latobicorum stood here. As early as in the 12th century a Slovene settlement existed around the town Castle. The railway line to town runs along the Temenica valley, while the main road rises across Medvedjek hill. Near Krtina above the valley is the Mala Loka Castle. On the north side of the road leading towards Litija is the village of Čatež with a twin-towered church on Zaplaški hrib. The road and railway branch off, one pair leading southeast towards Novo mesto and the other into Mirna River valley and further on towards Sevnica in the Posavje region. The Temenica River disappears into sinkholes near Ponikve, and during abundant rainfall into the Risavnica sinkhole. Now we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we did. To the next time on visiting Slovenia...
