Let us start our journey through to the area of Trzic.
Trzic is located in Upper Carniola. It lies north-west from Ljubljana. This is also my home region, so it will not be a problem writing this article, especially when I know that you, my dear readers are given the best information that you can get.(I hope…NO, I know….NO, I am confident!) On the spot where the Kamnik – Savinjska Alps end and the ridges of the Karavanke mountains appear in the background, an old tradesmen’s town developed over the centuries on the banks of the Tržiška Bistrica River, in a hollow between Dobrča and Kriška gora – Tržič. The town obtained market rights in 1492. For centuries it has been the home of the shoe making, tanning and blacksmiths trades. Many old houses with typical iron shutters have been preserved in the old town core (Kurniks House, Malleys House). Worth visiting is also the Tržič Museum. Leaving the town, the road begins to climb northward along the valley of the Mošenik stream, a tributary of the Bistrica River, towards the Ljubelj pass (1369m) in the Karavanke mountains, also an ex international border crossing to Austria. Before the road makes its final ascent to Ljubelj, it passes the village of Podljubelj, lying in a moraine valley. Not far is the Tominc Waterfall, in the vicinity of which mercury was excavated until 1902. At the Ljubelj border crossing the road enters a 1570 meter long tunnel leading to Austria. Just a stone’s throw from Ljubelj is the Zelenica ski center. North of Tržič the Tržiška Bistrica valley turns westward and continues as the Dolžan Gorge (where there is a geological study trail), ending at the scattered village of Jelendol below the Košuta ridge (2094m).South of it the Tržiška Bistrica River flows through a broad valley and empties into the Sava River. The wooded slopes rising upward from the valley are dotted with villages. So this was a journey through the area of Tržič. We hope you loved it. To the next time, see ya...
