The Upper Drava Valley and Dravograd

Upper Drava Valley

At the confluence of the Drava and Meža lies the town of Dravograd. Old Dravograd is built on a high terrace above the north bank of the Drava, which curves sharply just below the town. A castle was erected here in the 12th century by feudal lords. In the same period the settlement was granted market rights.

From Dravograd the road runs northwest past the village of Vič and 3km further to the Near the Vič border crossing, the Drava crosses the border and after passing Dravograd flows through a narrow, winding valley.

The road runs along its north bank and the railway along its south bank all the way to Maribor. On the spot where the valley starts to narrow, perched above the south bank, is Pukštanj Castle. The valley widens near the village of Trbonje. Nestled on high terraces above the north bank are Muta and Radlje ob Dravi.

The Mučka Bistrica stream flows down from Austria, cuts a narrow valley into the Kobansko hills and empties into the Drava at Muta. On the south bank near the mouth of the Crkvenica Stream, which originates in a multitude of streams scattered throughout the valleys below the northern slopes of Pohorje, lays Vuzenica.

A castle already stood below Pisterjev vrh in the Middle Ages and controlled the flow of traffic through the valley. Today it is in ruins.

Uf, we hope we told you everything! For more you will have to visit this valley. Be seeing you there...
