Velenje is full of coal
Velenje is presently the center of the Šalek Valley. It developed below a mighty castle perched on a steep hill. The castle was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th century, and today houses a museum with interesting collections. From here a road leads along the Paka ravine past Huda luknja to Mislinjska dolina. Before leaving the valley, the road passes through a short tunnel below a hill with the remains of the Šalek Castle, after which the valley was named. A second road leads from the same intersection to the south past Kavče and Andraž to Polzela in the lower Savinja Valley, and a third road runs westward towards Dobrna and Celje. The town is very young, the youngest in Slovenia. It began to develop in 1951 primarily as a residential settlement for miners. To this day it has developed into a well maintained, modern, attractive, green little town with a rich offer of tourist and catering services. Among its special attraction are Turistično jezero (Tourist Lake) on an area of 1 square kilometer, and Škalsko jezero (Škale Lake) on an area of 16 hectares. Now that is it. The best site tourism in Slovenia is located right here. So do not forget to check also for Bled and Bohinj, Postojna Cave and the capital Ljubljana. See you next time...
