Vrhnika, the birthplace of our greatest dramatist

On present-day Vrhnika, as early in Roman times, a settlement by the name of Nauportus stood on the site, serving both as an inland port and a military camp.

After the construction of a main road towards Trieste in 1720, boating declined in importance and transport began to develop. At the time the Idrija mine also kept a warehouse at the town. The railroad built in 1857 bypassed this area.

The settlement regained its former activity after the construction of a local railroad in 1899. On the incline below the Holy Trinity stands the house of birth of Slovenia’s greatest dramatist, Ivan Cankar, which houses a memorial collection.

The greatest natural attraction of the region is Močilnik, the source of the Ljubljanica River, which flows out in seven springs from under a rock wall (karst formation) below the Logatec plain.

The town lies in the extreme southwestern part of the Ljubljana basin. Along the edge of the Barje (marshland) in the direction of Ljubljana are the villages of Ligojna, Drenov grič and, nestled in the Horjul valley between the Polhov Gradec hills, Horjul. Along the edge of the Barje, just below the Logatec plateau, are Verd and Bistra with its Carthusian monastery, which has been transformed into a technical museum exhibiting among many others, an interesting collection of old automobiles.

Only a few kilometers ahead at the beginning of the Borovnišnica valley is Borovnica, a starting point for visits to the Pekel ravine. An exposed trail leads through the ravine.

Now that is all from this area. We hope you will visit it, to see the museum, the birth house of Ivan Cankar and off course many more...
